“I always encouraged my couples to have a private first moment to see each other about 2 or 3 hours before the ceremony, to allow plenty of time for portraits and group photos on a wedding day. I have found it makes the whole day smoother and less stressful for the couple, considerate to the guests by completing most of the formal photos before the ceremony. If they want to be traditional, just build in enough time after the ceremony for photography, and keep the shot list minimal.”

“Outdoors portraits, I always tried to capture the location in a creative way. examples like the couple walking down the sidewalk with the stadium on one side, Radius on the other. The downtown skyline. Or use the patio lights as a background at dusk, and light the subjects with off-camera lighting.”

“The transition from bright daytime to moody reception photos comes naturally as the day progressed into the evening. I utilize off-camera flash for reception candids around the dance floor as night falls. Most of the time, indoor lighting in reception hall is “dark and moody”.”

“My two cents: Keep seating with a wide enough aisle for two (candles placed along the aisle seating inevitably get knocked over), use picture window or garage door for the background? Or down the middle of the room….”

“The couple should let the photographer know what they liked most about the event venue, and think of ways to convey that visually. If the groom is huge Colts fan, for instance, a shot with the stadium, and having it within walking distance is great.”

“Something most couples don’t think about is how fast time evaporates on the wedding day. It flies by and sometimes important photos may be missed because of time constraints. They might not consider the lighting being way different at different times of year. Small details should not be overlooked. (Such as the groom wearing grandfather’s cufflinks, or the bride wrapping a keepsake on the bouquet, etc….details besides the obvious)”
